How much TRX to stake for energy
TRON's current staking system is Stake 2.0. When you stake, you pick which resource you want back: energy or bandwidth. USDT transfers mostly consume energy, so this guide only looks at staking for energy.
You don't get a fixed amount of energy per TRX. The network hands out a fixed pool of energy every day, and your slice depends on what share of all energy-staked TRX is yours. The on-chain numbers on September 25, 2026:
- Total daily energy (TotalEnergyLimit): 180 billion
- TRX staked for energy network-wide (TotalEnergyWeight): about 18.9 billion
- 180 billion ÷ 18.9 billion ≈ 9.5 energy per staked TRX per day
A USDT transfer to an address that already holds USDT uses about 65,000 energy. 65,000 ÷ 9.5 ≈ 6,842, so you need roughly 6,800 TRX staked to cover one transfer a day. Sending to an address that has never held USDT takes about 130,000 energy, which doubles the stake (here's why).
Why other figures don't match: guides written at different times quote very different staking amounts. The 6,800 TRX here is calculated from on-chain data as of September 2026. The ratio moves with total network staking: the more TRX everyone stakes, the less energy each TRX earns, and vice versa. Before staking, go by the energy estimate your wallet or a block explorer shows.
One more detail people miss: staked energy you've used comes back gradually over 24 hours rather than refilling all at once at midnight. A stake sized for one transfer a day really means one transfer roughly every 24 hours. You can't save up a week's worth and send it all on Friday.
Cost at 1, 5, 20 and 50 transfers a day
Assumptions: every transfer goes to an address that already holds USDT (about 65,000 energy), staking yields 9.5 energy per TRX per day, renting costs 2.5 TRX per transfer (our basic package), burning costs about 6.5 TRX per transfer, and a month is 30 days.
| Transfers a day | Energy a day | TRX to stake (locked) | Renting, per month | Burning, per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 65,000 | ≈ 6,800 TRX | 75 TRX | 195 TRX |
| 5 | 325,000 | ≈ 34,200 TRX | 375 TRX | 975 TRX |
| 20 | 1,300,000 | ≈ 136,800 TRX | 1,500 TRX | 3,900 TRX |
| 50 | 3,250,000 | ≈ 342,100 TRX | 3,750 TRX | 9,750 TRX |
How the numbers are worked out: TRX to stake = transfers a day × 65,000 ÷ 9.5. Renting per month = transfers a day × 2.5 × 30. Burning per month = transfers a day × 6.5 × 30.
The columns aren't measuring the same thing. Renting and burning are money you spend. The staking column is money you lock up and get back later, so you can't just compare the figures directly. To put the one-a-day case in perspective: 6,800 TRX would pay for about 2,720 rented transfers at 2.5 TRX each.
The table leaves out bandwidth. Every activated address gets 600 free bandwidth a day, and a USDT transfer uses about 345 bytes, so each transfer beyond the free allowance burns roughly 0.35 TRX more. That's the same whether you rent or burn. For the full fee breakdown, see how much a USDT-TRC20 transfer costs.
The real cost of staking
Staking can look free because your TRX balance doesn't shrink, and you can withdraw all of it after unstaking. It still costs you in three ways:
- Tied-up capital. While it's staked, that TRX can't be sent, sold or used for anything else. Five transfers a day means locking about 34,200 TRX, which is a lot for most individuals.
- A 14-day exit. Under Stake 2.0, unstaked TRX only becomes withdrawable after 14 days. If you suddenly need the money, you'll be waiting two weeks for it.
- Price exposure. To stake, you have to keep holding the TRX, and any swing in its price is yours. We don't make any call on where TRX is headed, and this guide doesn't treat staking as an investment.
Your energy is also a share of a moving total. If network-wide staking rises, the same stake earns less energy, and a stake that used to cover your volume may fall short. You'd then have to stake more or rent the difference.
When to rent and when to stake
Renting fits if
- You send a handful of transfers a day or fewer, or your volume is irregular. Some weeks you might not send anything.
- You don't have a large amount of idle TRX, or you don't want to hold TRX long term just to save on fees.
- You need access to your funds and can't live with a 14-day wait.
- You often pay new addresses (about 130,000 energy). Our 5 TRX advanced package covers one such transfer.
Staking fits if
- You already plan to hold a large amount of TRX long term and won't need it any time soon.
- Your daily volume is steady and predictable, and transfers are spread fairly evenly through the day.
- You're fine with your energy drifting as network staking changes, and you'll check on it from time to time.
Or combine them
High-volume senders can stake to cover their baseline and rent for spikes or new-address transfers. Our custom package buys N × 65,000 energy for N × 2.5 TRX (N from 1 to 100). The energy lasts 1 hour, so buy it right before a batch of payouts.
Either way, nobody should ever need your private key. A legitimate energy rental only needs the address you pay from, with no wallet connection or signature approval. See is TRON energy rental safe.
